What makes a mattress eco-friendly? Use a checklist, not a green label

“Eco-friendly” is broad marketing language. A better evaluation looks for specific evidence about material sourcing, certifications, manufacturing, durability, packaging and disposal.

Five claims to investigate

  1. Material source: natural, recycled, renewable or conventional?
  2. Certification: which standard, and what exactly does it cover?
  3. Durability: longer useful life can reduce replacement frequency.
  4. Manufacturing and shipping: where and how is the product made and transported?
  5. End of life: can components be recycled, reused or responsibly disposed of?

The answer is rarely a binary “green/not green.” Compare concrete claims and prioritize the factors that matter to you.
