Natural vs synthetic latex: what the label actually tells you

Natural latex originates from rubber-tree sap; synthetic latex is produced from petrochemical feedstocks. Blended latex combines sources. None of those labels alone tells you the mattress’s firmness or overall quality.

Natural latex

Natural latex uses rubber-tree-derived material. If “organic” matters to you, look beyond the word natural and verify a recognized certification such as GOLS for the latex component.

Synthetic latex

Synthetic latex typically uses styrene-butadiene rubber. It can still be formulated for a range of feels, so source and firmness are separate questions.

What to ask the manufacturer

  • Is the latex natural, synthetic or blended?
  • What percentage is natural?
  • Is it GOLS certified?
  • Is the certification for the component or finished product?
  • What process and firmness are used?
